Rangiora & Dunedin Cosmelan pigmentation treatment at Modbod Cosmetic Clinic

About the treatment

Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation method used by clinics worldwide to treat melasma, hormonal pigmentation and sun damage. It works by inhibiting melanin production at the cellular level — delivering a uniform, clear complexion that topical products alone cannot achieve.

How it works

Targeted at the
source of pigmentation.

Cosmelan works through a multi-step professional protocol. A depigmenting mask is applied in clinic, then removed at home after a prescribed number of hours. A dedicated homecare regimen follows to regulate melanin production and maintain results over time.

Unlike surface-level treatments, Cosmelan targets the melanocytes responsible for pigment overproduction. The result is a genuine, sustained reduction in pigmentation — not just temporary fading.

  • MelasmaOne of the most effective treatments available for this notoriously difficult-to-treat hormonal pigmentation condition.
  • Sun damage and age spotsAddresses cumulative UV-induced pigmentation across the face, hands and décolletage.
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentationTreats dark marks left behind by acne, injury or previous skin trauma.
  • Uneven skin toneDelivers a more uniform complexion and improved radiance across the full treatment area.

Common questions

Cosmelan
FAQs.

Cosmelan is suitable for all skin types and tones, making it one of the few professional pigmentation treatments that can be used safely on darker skin. It is particularly effective for melasma, hormonal pigmentation, sun damage and post-inflammatory pigmentation. Suitability is confirmed at your consultation.

The first 7 to 10 days involve significant redness, peeling and skin sensitivity. This is a normal and expected part of the process as the skin renews. Most clients take a week away from social commitments following the peel. Pea will prepare you thoroughly for what to expect and provide a full aftercare protocol.

Yes — the homecare phase is a critical part of the Cosmelan protocol. The in-clinic treatment initiates the depigmentation process, but the homecare regimen regulates melanin production over the following months to prevent rebound pigmentation and maintain your results. Consistency with the homecare is essential.

With consistent homecare and sun protection, results are long-lasting. Melasma in particular is a chronic condition influenced by hormones and UV exposure, so ongoing maintenance and diligent SPF use are important. Pea will advise a long-term management plan at your follow-up appointments.

The Cosmelan consultation is $30 and redeemable on your first treatment. The full Cosmelan package including the in-clinic peel, homecare kit, complimentary microneedling session and two follow-up reviews is $1,900. This is a comprehensive investment in a proven, lasting result.

Before your appointment

Important
pre-treatment information.

Sun exposure

Avoid significant sun exposure and fake tan for at least 4 weeks before treatment. Active sun exposure immediately before a Cosmelan peel significantly increases the risk of complications. SPF 50 daily is non-negotiable throughout the entire protocol.

Active skincare

Discontinue retinol, acids and any active skincare ingredients 7 to 10 days before your peel. Your skin needs to be in a calm, stable state before the Cosmelan mask is applied.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Cosmelan is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please wait until your journey is complete. We are happy to consult and plan ahead for when you are ready.

Plan your diary

Allow 7 to 10 days of social downtime following your Cosmelan peel. Significant peeling and redness is expected and is part of the process. Do not schedule important events, travel or other skin treatments during this period.
